A message from CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We want every student to love learning, be proud of their school, and feel like an important part of their school community. In order to do this, we need to make sure that we listen to and learn from what they are experiencing every day.
To help meet this goal, your school is using a new survey called Cultivate. This survey will ask every student in grades 5-12 to share their perspective on learning experiences in the classroom. This information will help teachers, principals, and the district better understand how students feel in classes, and learn more about ways we can all improve.
- Cultivate is a survey tool designed by the University of Chicago to help teachers and principals build stronger relationships and partnerships with students to improve learning.
- The survey takes 15-20 minutes to complete, and it's anonymous.
- The survey gathers information about how students feel about their school and classroom culture, and their overall sense of belonging and engagement. It asks students to share on topics like, “This teacher makes what we're learning really interesting” or “In this class, my ideas are taken seriously.”
- Students will take the survey twice every year - once at the beginning and then at the end of the year. We will use the first survey to learn how we can get better, and the second to measure how we’ve improved.
Students will be asked to take this survey at school some time in November or December, and we will be excited to hear from them! We hope you will encourage your children to participate so that their perspectives are included in this important work.

Queremos que cada estudiante ame el aprendizaje, esté orgulloso de su escuela y sienta que es parte importante de su comunidad escolar. Para lograr esto, necesitamos asegurarnos de que escuchemos y aprendamos de todo lo que le ocurre cada día.
Para lograr esta meta, su escuela utilizará una nueva encuesta llamada Cultivate. La encuesta le pedirá a cada estudiante de quinto a duodécimo grado que comparta su perspectiva sobre sus experiencias en el aula. Esta información ayudará a los docentes, los directores y el distrito a entender mejor cómo se sienten los estudiantes en las clases y a aprender más sobre cómo todos podemos mejorar.
- Cultivate (sitio web en inglés) es una herramienta de encuestas diseñada por la Universidad de Chicago para ayudar a los docentes y los directores a fortalecer sus relaciones y colaboraciones con los estudiantes, para así mejorar el aprendizaje.
- La encuesta toma 15 a 20 minutos en completar y es anónima.
- La encuesta obtiene información sobre cómo se sienten los estudiantes en cuanto a las culturas de su escuela y su aula, y sobre si en general se sienten bienvenidos en la escuela y comprometidos con esta. Les pide a los estudiantes que hablen de temas como “este maestro presenta los temas de clase de manera muy interesante” o “en esta clase, mis ideas se toman en serio”.
- Los estudiantes tomarán la encuesta dos veces cada año: una vez al principio del año y una vez al final del año. Utilizaremos la primera encuesta para saber cómo podemos mejorar y la segunda para medir cuánto hemos mejorado.
Los estudiantes tomarán la encuesta en la escuela en algún momento en noviembre o diciembre. ¡Nos entusiasma escuchar de ellos! Esperamos que animen a sus niños a participar para que sus perspectivas sean incluidas en esta importante labor.
